Bee on Coreopsis

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

All last year, we wondered what kind of flowers a large, triangle-shaped patch of leaves in the front yard might show. but nothing ever happened. We nearly cut it down several times, but every time, Mel decided to keep it just a little while longer.

We took leaf samples to so-called experts at local nurseries. They knew nothing. During one visit to pick up vegetable plants for the garden, we happened to pass by a row of plants labeled “coreopsis.” Those leaves matched our leaves exactly.

Mel finally mowed down the patch after winter frost made a mess of it. Most coreopsis are perennials, so I had faith that they would grow back. They did. Rapidly. And, this time, they sprouted flower buds and we have been waiting anxiously to see what the flowers would look like.

The coreopsis are starting to bloom now — a triangular yellow mound in the middle of the green front lawn.

We like it. And the bees like it.
